Local Stories - How did Mangonui get its name.

We are learning about our local places.

We talked about how Mangonui got its name.

Moehuri came on his waka and was looking for a safe place to land. A big shark guided him into the harbour and that is how Mangonui got its name.

Mango means shark and nui means big.

We made some puppets showing Moehuri, the waka and the Mangonui (big shark). We used these paper puppets to tell the story.

Leo said, "We were making the waka and we made up the story.
Vincent said, "I made a big shark."

Charlie said, "I made a shark."

Bianca said, "I liked making my shark with all the pretty stickers."

Charlie said. "I was playing with the shark and waka."

Writing in Pukeko Class

 We love writing.

We have lots of stories to tell.

We are authors.

This is how we do writing in Pukeko class.

These are all the things we do to be a good writer.

We use our letter and word chart.

I draw my plan.

I sound out words.

I look around the room to find words.

I look at the white board to find words.

I look on the word chart to find words.

I use a finger space between my words.

I put a full stop at the end of my sentence

I read my story.

I am proud of my work.

Using shapes to make pictures and patterns

We have been learning about shapes. We looked at what is the same and what is different. We counted the corners and the edges. Some shapes have straight sides. Some have curvy sides.

Shapes are fun!!

Have a look at what we made.

Charlies says "I made it on red paper with circles and rectangles."

Winter says, "It is a robot."

Marina says, "This is a robot house."

This is a sunset.

There is a flower and a sun and it is in dark.

I made a treasure chest at the beach.

I am making a sun and flower.

This is a garden at a house.

I made a picture with gems.

My one has a flower and a sun and some grass and some sky all around the edges.
It is my lawn.

Friday Morning in Pukeko class.

On Friday mornings we go to the library. We love listening to new stories. We know that the stickers on the spine show us where the books live in the library.
Mentors from Tuatara class come and work with us in the library and then in the class too. They read to us, help us with our publishing and then practise literacy activities with us.
Thanks for caring for us Tuatara class.

We are reading our books.

Thanks for helping us Heath.

I like reading!

I was reading Piggy and the Elephant book.

I like drawing. Kingston is reading me a story.

Kylie was reading a book with me.

Max says, "I am in the beanbag and I am reading a book."

Bianca says, "I like learning about shapes."

I matched up the words with the pictures and did a big puzzle.

I was building the words.
